We Need Dreamers

© 2017 by P Michael Biggs

We need a few dreamers,
people who go where
we should not go,
men and women who
brave the wilderness,
who map out new frontiers,
who invent the future.

Yes, we need a few dreamers.

We need dreamers who will
overcome the nay-sayers,
and run past ‘stop signs’
just because they can.

We need dreamers who
see tomorrow today,
who lead us where
we don’t know
we need to go.

We need dreamers
who will help invent
what we need
even though we don’t know
what we need

We need dreamers who look
at the distant hills and say,
“I wonder what’s over there,”
and then they go
and find out.

We need dreamers
who don’t know the bounds
of earth, and time, and space.
They just go out
and find the edges,
and push them further out.
They dream of ‘what if’ and then …
they lasso it and bring it home.

Where can we find
some dreamers like this?

Where, indeed.

Writing the Narrative

© 2017 by P Michael Biggs

We write the narrative of our lives.
We make the rules,
we set the standards,
we play the game.

We invent expectations.
We direct the movies in our minds
of what happens, when, how, where.
We dress ourselves in robes
and act the part we see.

We put on restraints.
“Oh, I could never …”
“Oh, I always do …”
“Oh, that’s not me at all.”

We limit our tastes,
we limit our reach,
we limit our possibilities,
we put restraints on our hearts.

We write the narrative of our lives.
It’s in our hearts.
It’s in our minds, and therefore
we act out of our narrative.

And if we ever dared the ‘what if’...
Well, that would either be
Heaven or suicide.
If we opened our eyes,
our minds, our heart
to what is possible.
Now wouldn’t that be something?

I wonder if I can hold
the pen for a while.
What if I dabble in the possible?
What if I unleash one tiny dream?
What would become of me?

Oh, my friend.
You become poet extraordinaire.
You become creator and king.
You become director and producer.
You begin the journey toward
becoming a whole and complete you.

Here’s the pen.
Go write!

Sometimes I Steal

© 2017 by P Michael Biggs

Sometimes I steal.
I see something I like
and I take it
and make it my own.

I saw a choral director once
and I really liked his style.
I stole from him.
I stole his hunch of shoulder,
his small subtle moves
and the grand sweeping
swing of his baton.

I read a book and stole from it.
The author touched me profoundly
and I liked his words so much
that I adopted them as my own.

He said ‘believe in yourself, your ideas’,
and so, I did.
He said, ‘you can …’
and so, I am.

He said, ‘forgive others,’
and so, I forgave.

He said, ‘what if’
and I thought, and pondered,
and tried, and pretended,
and so, some of my dreams
became more than ‘what if’.
They became real.

I borrow and steal
every day.
I am a thief,
And I am happy.
