A Fresh View of Wholeness

A Fresh View of Wholeness
© 2020 by P Michael Biggs

In the beginning …
Parker Palmer said it.
“Wholeness does not mean perfection;
it means embracing brokenness
as an integral part of life.”

I guess I am whole, in light of this.
I am imperfect. My body is imperfect.
I have flaws, weaknesses, disabilities.

I can’t move as swiftly as before.
I have to take more frequent rests.

And so, I am embracing my lacks.
I am accepting my limitations.
I am imperfect, yet whole.

Now that’s a fresh thought.

We Hunger for Love

We Hunger for Love
© 2020 by P Michael Biggs

Mother Teresa said it long ago.
“There is more hunger
for love and appreciation
in this world
than for bread.”

And it is so.

We long to be loved,
to be validated,
to be esteemed.

We seek recognition
simply because we live.

What is my part
in this grand drama?

To seek ways in which I
give out love, I honor,
I esteem my fellow man.
I see you as a valid individual,
not one that I can use
for my own gain.

You are worthy
of love and respect
simply because you ARE!

If I Should Forget

If I Should Forget
© 2019 by P Michael Biggs

If I should forget to say my prayers
God would still watch over me.
He would never forget me.

If I should forget to say ‘Thank you’
God would still be nearby,
watching, caring, and giving
again and again

If I should forget to say ‘Goodnight’,
He would never slumber nor sleep.
He would hover nearby, all night
just because I am loved.
He never takes his eyes off me

If I should complain that it is
too hot, too cold, to rainy
or we need more snow,
the world will still revolve.
the moon and stars will shine
and my heavenly Father will
keep loving me
through it all.

You see,
Sometimes I forget,
and yet, He never forgets me.

Roses in January

Roses in January
© 2019 by P Michael Biggs

We went to Hawaii in September.
I’m remembering those times in January.

I got my dream bicycle when I was nine.
I remember it 61 years later in January.

I’ve met and rubbed elbows
with a few ‘heroes’ of mine
down through the years.

Three of them are gone now,
But I remember them today, in January.
Their essence, their kindness,
their patience and words
have stayed with me all these years.

I’m having roses as if freshly picked
simply because I have memories
of days and times and people
of yesterday.

Memories are, indeed
roses on a cold January evening.

Did You Get What You Wanted?

Did You Get What You Wanted?
© 2019 by P Michael Biggs

Wants abound.  I want lots of things.
And so do you, I suppose.
Toys, gadgets, devices,
clothes, shoes, hairstyles,
                    automobiles, homes,
vacations, new sights and sounds.

I’ve had this in my files
for a long time.
“Did you get what you wanted?
I did.
And what did you want?
To call myself beloved, to feel myself beloved on the earth.”

Raymond Carver wrote that
in one of his last poems
Late Fragment.
He wanted esteem,
                     to be beloved.

Oprah Winfrey said, on her last show,
“People want to be validated.”
They want recognition,
esteem, to be seen and heard.
The bottom line is, of course,
TO BE LOVED.

We all want to be loved,
cherished simply because we exist.
We want someone to know our name,
nod and say “Hi. How are you?”
We want a simple acknowledgement
                                              that we exist.

We’re not asking for the lottery.
We’re not asking to be crowned Queen.
We’re simply saying, See me.  Know me
                                    Love me.

Peace, at last,
When we know
We are loved!
