A Friend

A Friend
© 2016 by P Michael Biggs

When I met her I was still fragile
The wounds were hidden
But they were there

And her wounds were there too
Sometimes they came out
Sometimes I had to help her
edge them to the light

And so we talked
And so we laughed
And so we trusted

Slowly at first …

Are you for real?
Are you what I perceive you to be?

Can you possibly become that great friend
and lover I have longed for?
Will you abandon me?
Run away?
Leave me for another?

I have dreams, she said
I want a degree
I want the education I never got

What do you want?

First I want you to have your dream
And degree and education

And then …
I want to write
I want my voice to be heard
The voice of encouragement and validation
The voice of hope and inspiration

Then let us walk together

And so we did
And so we are

To borrow from Toni Morrison
“She gather me, man.
The pieces I am,
She gather them
and give them back to me
In all the right order.”

She listens, and encourages
And nurtures, and loves
We talk, we laugh,
We walk, we love

I cry on her shoulder
She cries on mine

And Toni comes back …
“It’s good, you know
When you got a woman
Who is a friend of your mind.”

And a friend of your heart, Toni.

A friend of your heart.

Seaside Revisited

© 2016 by P Michael Biggs

A Video Version

Where is a better space and time than by the seaside?
The lull of the waves
The chirp of the birds
The gentle breeze combing my hair

My little feathered friend looks on as I write
If I had food, I’d give him a bite
If I had a hammock I’d take a nap here
If I had a million bucks I’d retire here
I am seaside – I feel at home here

The pace is relaxed
The people are welcoming
The sun is bright
The smiles are brighter yet

I am seaside and I am content

The sea calls to me
As it calls to so many others
It has a voice like no other
For it speaks its own language

The words I hear are …
Let go of your woes
Take off your shoes and wiggle your toes
Relax into the arms of the sea

As the waves crash to the shore
In their return to the sea
Let your worries flee to the sea

Jerry Johnson Jones

© 2016 by P Michael Biggs

Jerry Johnson Jones
He had two phones
Oh how he groans
When someone asks for one of his phones

Jerry Johnson Jones
His life he bemoans
His phone ring in overtones
He groans and groans

Jerry Johnson Jones
He hates the saxophone
And he wears headphones
When anywhere near trombones

Jerry Johnson Jones
Sings like a baritone
He doesn’t need a microphone
Not our Jerry Johnson Jones

Jerry Johnson Jones
He loves to eat scones
He stuffs them in his cheekbones
Does that cause gallstones?
That would be the end of JJ Jones
