The Unwrapping

© 2016 by P Michael Biggs

There’s a mess going on here
A mess of joy and laughter
Of hopes and smiles
Of wants fulfilled
Yes, there’s a mess going on here

The pile of tissue tells stories
The discovery of joys
The finding the wanted and the unexpected
Yet finding back of it all a heart,
A heart that speaks love and good will

Unwrap slowly
Savor the packaging
Enjoy the moment of mystery
just before the opening

Let out the ooh’s and ah’s
Let eyes and hearts
connect across the room

Whisper the “thank you”
Blow a kiss
hold a hand
hug a shoulder
for just a moment

Give a squeeze
Say the words
"I love you, Merry Christmas"

And in the middle of the wrappings
that litter the floor
There you find it … Love

It’s in the blue ribbon
The white and red paper
The string that was used to tie a package

It’s in the black velvet box holding precious gems
It’s in the watch now adorning your wrist
It’s in the belt and the sweater
your Aunt gave

Love is in the gift card from Amazon
or Macy’s or Starbucks
It is in the new skate board
And you find it tucked inside new boots
And colorful sox and footballs and dolls

Yes, love is there
In the middle of the mess
In the scotch tape, the torn paper
The ripped boxes

I think that is something
I want to unwrap
all year long …
The love of a spouse,
a child, a grand-child
The love of a parent, a sibling
a cousin, a close friend

And the love of a God
   who loves me
      As I am,
         not as I should be

Let love be unwrapped this Christmas
and the coming year
