Awakened by the Shoulds

Awakened by the Shoulds
© 2018 by P Michael Biggs

I was awakened by the shoulds.
They tugged and pulled,
They bounced on my bed
Like two balls made of lead.

You should mow the lawn.
You should rise before dawn.
You should always eat rice.
You should be extra nice.

You should go to school.
You should never drool.
You should never cuss,
and don’t ever make a fuss.

The shoulds came close.
They began to boast.
They yelled, they screamed.
They chased away my dreams.

Shouldn’t go there.
There might be a bear.
Shouldn’t eat that.
It’ll make you fat.

Shouldn’t miss school.
You’ll be a fool.
Shouldn’t get in a fight.
That’s just not right.

They yelled and ranted.
I ran and panted.
The should chased me
Up a big ole’ tree.

And then I thunk and thunk,
as I hugged that tree trunk.
Will the shoulds ever stop?
Even when I’m on top?

And I thunk some more,
My, that was a chore.
And I began to see,
What was right with me.

I can do a lot.
Ideas I’ve got.
I can jump and run.
Sickness, there ain’t none.

If there’s any should
that I could or would,
it’s to take hold of love
and let go of,
and not be under the thumb of

Should.

Is the World Ending

Is the World Ending
© 2018 by P Michael Biggs

I’ve gone through
seventeen major elections
in my lifetime,
and with each one,
the world was supposed to end.

It hasn’t ended yet.

I’ve endured relationship breakups,
and every time it seemed
the world was ending.

And it did not.

Upon awakening, the next morning,
the world began again.
Some newness, some fresh something
came along and I started to dance again,
I started to live and breathe again.

The world did not end.

I caught sight of something …
Beauty slipped in, unawares.
I caught a glimmer of a new horizon
just off in the distance,
and I once again
gave birth to hope.

Oh no, the world is not ending.
It is convulsing, perhaps.
It is having growth pains, maybe.
It is changing, it is evolving
in strange and wonderful ways.

But ending?
No.  Just changing.

Looking for the Ideal Moment

Looking for the Ideal Moment
© 2018 by P Michael Biggs

Some people spend their entire lives
looking for the ideal moment.
I’ve heard them say …
It’s too cold. Another day perhaps.
It’s too hot. Let’s wait for cooler weather.

Interest rates are too high to buy.
Interest rates are too low to invest.
She’s pretty enough, I guess.
Wonder what she’ll look like
next year?

And they wait … and wait.

Some people wait for the ideal moment,
and then never get going.
There’s always something,
some reason to delay
getting in the game.

And they wait … and wait.

Know what I’ve learned?
There comes a time when
we have to make our ideal moment.
My feelings rarely have anything to do with
the ideal moment.

Perhaps … perhaps we take the
less-than-sterling opportunity
and turn it into an ideal moment.

Now, wouldn’t that be something?
